church visit

Posted by dturn on December 31, 2007

My family and I visited Victory Cathedral in Romeoville yesterday.
Victory is pastored by Smokie Norful.

Although we got there late, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

They hold their services in the auditorium at the Romeoville High School.
When we arrived the place was packed. It had to be between 700-800 people in attendance.
Not that numbers were the biggest story.

There was a definite buzz in the place and it only took me a few seconds to figure out why.

It was amazing to see so many people who were excited about being in church.
The message was lively and relevant.

It’s encouraging to see that young urban-suburbans can be ministered to in an effective manner.

I look forward to seeing what God has in store for Victory Cathedral in 2008.

holiday update

Posted by dturn on December 27, 2007

I’m back after a blogging-free christmas break.

I had the opportunity to speak at our early service this past Sunday and it was awesome.

I talked about how the love of God needs to be ReGifted.
There are so many people, in the church and out, who have never received the love of God.

I was feeling like crap physically but God went past my natural abilities to do what He does best.

1 person gave their life over to the Lord!!
It was an older gentlemen who many in the church had been praying for.
It was incredible for him to come forward.

I am looking forward to seeing what God has in store for ’08

jumpstart 12/17

“They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.”
Psalm 145:7

Today is a day to celebrate.
It is a brand new occasion to feel good and to expect great things.
In spite of the challenges that you will face today, take some time out to celebrate.

You may celebrate by wearing that favorite outfit that you have in your closet.
You also may celebrate by playing that song that makes you want to dance whenever you hear it.

Whatever you need to do to enjoy this day, you need to do it.

God has created this moment in time for you not to be depressed and blue, but to rejoice at the fact that you were given another day on this earth.
Don’t take for granted this opportunity.
Don’t let situations and circumstances keep you from celebrating.
Don’t let people overwhelm you with their problems.

Choose to celebrate.
Choose to make yourself happy.
Choose to live.

Father, thank you for giving me many reasons to celebrate. Thank You for being able to look in the mirror and see the wonderful person that you have created. Help me to show others that they also have a reason to celebrate. As I go forward into my day, help me to remember that this and every day, should be celebrated. I rejoice in Your love and kindness toward me. Amen.

power person of the year

The power person of the year for 2007 is Dave Ferguson.

Dave is the lead pastor of Community Christian Church based in Naperville, Illinois.
CCC is a leader in the multi-site movement for the 21st century church.

A power person is not someone who has the most money or the biggest following. A power person impacts their world and uses their power to influence someones life.
Not only is Dave a tremendous leader.
He is also a gifted teacher, a supportive pastor, and most importantly, a terrific dad and husband.
He has co-authored an awesome book, The Big Idea.

With all his accomplishments, Dave is one of the most humble people I have ever met.
It’s good to know that you can achieve great things and still be a regular guy.

He has become a role model for me to follow.
He has influenced thousands if not millions around the world.

I am thankful for the work that he has done.

jumpstart 12/10

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Galatians 6:9

When facing a difficult situation you must face it head on.
No matter if your back is against the wall and you can’t figure out the solution, you must deal with it.

Don’t be distracted by those people who say that you can’t make it.
Don’t be distracted by your past failures and mistakes.
God loves you too much to let you be defeated.
He has provided a way of escape for you.

It’s up to you to take it.

Even though it may seem impossible, all things are possible with God.
Get rid of any negativity or unbelief. This will only hinder you.

Continue to build your faith by reading God’s word.
Let go of any bitterness, anger, or unforgiveness. These things will stop your blessings.
End any sinful practices and wrong associations.
Proverbs 13:20 says that a companion of fools will be a fool.
Connect with people of integrity and strength.
You have to want to get out.
Seek direction from the word of God.
When the time comes act.
Don’t be afraid to make a move in the direction you want to go.

It may be tough but the reward is worth it.

Father, thank You for the ability to keep going.
Although it difficult sometimes, it is comforting to know that You are always with me.
Your Holy Spirit is a guide and an encourager for me.
As I continue to walk in Your path, I am confident that I will receive Your blessings.
Give me the strength to climb over, walk through and dig deep until I reach my goal.
Amen.

when

Posted by dturn on December 6, 2007

Lots of churches don’t grow at all.
Makes you wonder why.

We have the most incredible story and the most incredible Savior.
Yet, many churches close their doors everyday.

I think that, often times, churches focus their attention on themselves instead of looking to serve those who are not “in the church”.

I think that many times people who are not Christ-followers, look at us and see how we want everybody to come to our programs and services, but hardly ever reach outside our circles.

In my community, there have been more than a few murders of young girls and women this year.

The church has hardly said a word.

Is this because these women weren’t part of some prominent family?
Is it because some of them had a “sordid” past?

It makes me sick to my stomach to see how some are ignored while others are pampered.

When will we learn?
