funky faith friday

Posted by dturn on January 30, 2009

Here are a few things that I am crazy enough to believe God for:

1. A house full of people for my first info meeting next Sunday.

2. A great place for weekly worship at a great price.

3. A diverse group of people to help me lead this church movement.

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”
Proverbs 16:3

When we were children, a lot of us had dreams of being an astronaut, a fireman, a ballerina, or some sort of superhero.
We spent most of or waking hours pretending to be what we dreamed of.
As we got older these dreams faded behind the realities of life.

God has created a passion inside of us. This passion is what fulfills our lives and brings Him glory.
If you have a God-given dream don’t be afraid to pursue it.

As sure as God has given it to you, He will provide you with the tools and resources to be successful.
It was God that gave you the inspiration.

Dreams need to be followed up with action.

A dream without a plan is just a good night’s sleep.

He would not have given it to you and not expect anything in return.
In the parable of the talents there were 2 people who put their talents to work and 1 who did not.
God has given you a dream and a passion.
Don’t just hide it or bury underneath doubt and fears (does God really want me to do that?).
Put everything you have behind your God-given dreams.

Make a plan.
Take some action.
Give God the glory.
Don’t ever lose your ability to dream.

God, thank you for giving me the ability to dream.
Thank you for the passion and the courage to go after what you have put in my heart.
I believe that You have given us the ability to see what You see.
From this day I will walk confidently and not give in to fears.
I press toward the mark to obtain the prize that You have for me.

do we need another church?

Posted by dturn on January 28, 2009

Joliet is home to over 170,000 people.
Over 60% (100,000) of these people don’t attend church on a regular basis and don’t have a real connection to God.
There are lots of good churches in our city, but there is a need for more.

Studies have shown that the best way to reach new people is by starting new churches.

A church that will bridge the gap between hopelessness and faith.
It is our responsibility to be the “body” of Christ on the earth.
We have the word of God, but we need to be the word of God in ACTION.

Our purpose should be to “go and make disciples”.

To “go” means to get involved in the lives of people in our community.
To “go” means to be concerned with the social issues that plague people of all races and nationalities.
To “go” means to express to every person that we come across that they are valuable and important.

If you “go” you can’t hide behind the four walls of a building.
If you “go” you can’t pretend to be something on Sunday that you’re not on Monday.
If you “go” you’ll have to lay your ego and pride down for a while.

Joliet is waiting on a new model of ministry.
One that will take advantage of new technologies and mix them with a personal touch to connect people to God.

There is a need for people to team-up and make a difference.
No egos. No agendas.

Just ministry.

new church jump-off

Posted by dturn on January 27, 2009

As I start out on this church launching journey, I feel like I need to do an info post.
Here it is:

First of all, I don’t want it to be thought or said that I am starting a church because I am angry about things at my current church.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
I am starting this church because God said so. That’s it.
Isn’t that enough?

I am not trying to be anti-my home church or anything like that.
I am trying to be true to the vision that God has given me.
There is room for all churches to be used by God for His glory.
One type of church can’t reach all types of people.

That being said, I am seriously looking for a racially-diverse group of people who are willing to go all-out for God.
Yes, that means people of ANY skin color (white, black, brown, yellow).
Also, people of ANY nationality (American, Asian, African, European, etc.)
I need people who want to show the world that color is not the most important thing about a person.

Launching a church is a big challenge.
Fortunately, I have God on my side.
I am ready to do some major work for the Kingdom.

Prayers and assistance are appreciated.

jumpstart 1/22

Posted by dturn on January 22, 2009

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men”.
Matthew 4:19

Whenever I’m on a road trip, I hate to have to follow someone to our destination.
I seem to either drive too slow or I get distracted by the scenery.
Either way, eventually, I lose track of where they are and I inevitably miss a turn.

Who or what we follow has a lot to do with where we end up and how long it takes us to get there.

As you start your day today, who or what are you following?
Are you following the latest trends and losing your identity?
Are you following the money and forgetting your purpose?

Jesus wants us to lay down our desires, our motives, what we really want, in order to follow Him.
In return he promises to give us a life that is really worth living.

He is the only way to get to that life.
If you follow Him, you’ll never be lost.

Father, help me to continue to follow the path that You have set before me. Thank you for opening doors of opportunity on a daily basis for me. Help me to look past the distractions of life. I also ask for the wisdom and guidance to be successful in pursuing Your vision for my life.

my dreams

Posted by dturn on January 19, 2009

While I can appreciate MLK’s Dream, I have some dreams of my own:

1. I dream of starting a multi-racial movement that truly reflects the passion of Christ for ALL people.

2. I dream of people not being color-blind, but celebrating the creativeness of God.

3. I dream of the body of Christ representing Him more than a particular people-group.

Like Barack said, “this is our time”.
I believe that this is the time for a new generation of Christ-follower to be the church and bring a little heaven to the earth.

Anybody want to dream with me?
